Harmonic Series - Overtone Series
partial: any of the sine waves by which a complex tone is described
harmonic: any of a set of partials that are whole number multiples of a common fundamental frequency
fundamental: whole number multiple of itself
inharmonicity: a measure of the deviation of a partial from the closest ideal harmonic, typically measured in cents for each partial
overtone: any partial except the lowest
Half Step: the distance from one note (key) on a keyboard to the next adjacent key
Whole Step: 2 half steps
Modes (7): Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian
Tetrachord: first 4 notes of a scale, last 4 notes of a scale
Pentatonic Scale: scale with 5 pitches per octave
Major Scale: WWhWWWh (steps)
Minor Scale: Natural Minor: WhWWhWW; Harmonic Minor: raise 7th note half a step; Melodic Minor: raise 6th and 7th notes half a step (ascending only - descending, use natural minor pattern)
Tonic: 1st note (degree) in a scale
Supertonic: 2nd
Mediant: 3rd
Subdominant: 4th
Dominant: 5th
Submediant: 6th
Leading Tone: 7th
Octave: 8th
Circle of Fifths: clockwise 5ths, counterclockwise 4ths
